On Being Sane in Insane Places takes its name from the 1973 study which kickstarted the anti-psychiatry movement in the US. It is written as a testament to the difficulty of trusting one’s own sanity in a mad world, and the solidarity which comes from finding others attempting to do the same. Its lyrics connect the dots between individual’s stories of mental illness and various world events, such as Donald Trump’s retreat from the Paris accord.
Good Canary believes that, like a canary in a coalmine, a pop song can be an excellent warning. Her piano-based alternative pop has been featured by BBC Radio 6, and compared by BBC Introducing to Regina Spektor and St Vincent. She plays in London and Oxford and has previously recorded with the all-female group of sound engineers and producers, Omnii Collective.
The track was co-produced by Matt Lepannen, of the Animal Farm, and features artwork by Annabel Dover.
