111 year old Welsh male voice choir come to Newbury

On Saturday 10 June, the Corn Exchange, Newbury will welcome one of the best and longest running Welsh male voice choirs in the UK to Newbury – the Caerphilly Male Voice Choir.

Performing songs that range from classic male voice standards such as ‘Gwahoddiad’, the operatic chorus ‘O Isis and Osiris’ from Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and the show stopping ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, the voice choir will perform to the same passionate standard that they have upheld for the last 111 years.

Formed in 1906 with members of the local cricket club, the Caerphilly Male Voice Choir was started amidst the industrial revolution in South Wales. Founding Musical Director, Jordan Davies kept the choir active for the first 50 years, and 60 years on they are still going strong.

The choir’s initial aim was to make money to improve their town’s cricket facilities, but as their members grew, so did their wish to support their community. Now a registered charity, they have gone on to support the people of Caerphilly by performing at charitable events both locally and further abroad and touring to venues across the UK.

The current members of the choir are from many different backgrounds, with ages ranging from 32 – 91 years old, and some choristers having served the choir of over 50 years; each member sharing a passion for singing and continuing the solid reputation that they and their founding fathers have built over the last century. For their show in Newbury, the choir will be accompanied by accomplished soprano soloist, Cheryl Roberts.

For a rousing evening song from the Caerphilly Male Voice Choir, head down to the Corn Exchange in Newbury at 7.45pm on Saturday 10 June. Tickets cost £15 (£13 concessions).
