Family Dance Week returns, featuring award-winning shows and lively workshops

Now an annual fixture on the Oxford cultural calendar, Dancin’ Oxford’s Family Dance week has extended its reach and now encompasses two shows outside the city.

Commencing October 6 to October 15, this theatrical week ensures some mesmerising performances which has a programme that all the family can enjoy.

Claire Thompson, who started Dancin’ Oxford, 12 years ago has run it ever since, said: ‘It’s not easy programming a week of shows and activities in which people of all ages can have some fun, but we’ve certainly achieved it this year.

“With Cornerstone in Didcot and The Mill in Banbury joining in we’ve got some memorable shows coming up that I know young and old will enjoy.”

The two big shows are the award-winning Tipping Point by Ockham’s Razor at Cornerstone and Stuff at The Mill by Sean Kempton, the lead clown for Cirque du Soleil.

Tipping Point, suitable for 5 years+, is a gripping 60 minutes performed by a cast of 5 who transform 5 metre metal poles into a rich landscape of scenes.

Stuff deals with love; it’s a funny, fast-moving and playful show in which anything could happen. Suitable for 10 years+.

One of the two shows suitable for 4 years+ is hosted by The Museum of History of Science. The 3 free performances by Dancing Strong, called Discover Us, are an looking at what connects us with the world around us through dance.

The other is by Peut-Etre Theatre who make a return to Pegasus with Shh…Bang!  examining our relationship with sound and silence.

For toddlers and young children the popular Baby Boogie returns to the Story Museum and Disco Dadz is back at Barton Neighbourhood Centre and Donnington Doorstep.

Oxford’s Joëlle Pappas closes the festival with her dance workshop, to live music, for young children and their families. The workshop at West Oxford Community Centre will be followed by a free family disco.
