Devizes set for intimate performance by Emily Barker.... but shhhh, it's a secret....

Wiltshire live music promoters Sheer Music have pulled off another booking coup with award-winning songwriter Emily Barker performing an intimate, fire-side show at The Lamb in Devizes on Saturday January 14.

Instead of flummoxing you with our usual drivel and tripe, we thought we’d let the Rt Hon Lord Kieran Moore, head of the Sheer Music cohort, explain this show for you. For information on tickets, times and location, skip to the bottom of this post:

“I like to try and impart, with all my shows, the reasons for the booking, to help forge the identity of what we do and why we do it.

“I was encouraged a few years ago to attempt to be more expressive with that side of things, and the results have largely been successful. More people know about our shows, we have a growing community of genuine live music lovers who love what we do, why we do it and importantly have become part of the story too.

“We’ve met hundreds of wonderful people and helped as many too, so it’s great pleasure we can announce another amazing gig, with an incredible musician that fits perfectly into our canon of gigs and hopefully right into the familiar standard you’re accustomed to.

“This show has been a long time coming, like a looooong time coming. Emily has been band mates, label mates and well, simply mates, to many of her contemporaries who have played our town our venue, our shows. But for what ever reason Emily has never been, she is our missing link in so much.

“So we are proud as hell to introduce Australian singer-songwriter, drama theme tune writer, globe trotter, award winner and all round musical hero EMILY BARKER to Devizes.

“Emily first came to my attention as part of Frank Turner’s live shows at the Olympics, the England Keep My Bones album, his Wembley Arena show and her single Fields Of June.

“Releasing four records up to 2014 as Emily Barker & The Red Clay Halo, she regularly performed at Marlborough’s Sound Knowledge record shop, where I even got to do the sound for her Americana 3 piece, Applewood Road, who released an album of the same name just this year.

“Her other work has included writing theme tunes to BBC drama Wallander (based on the Swedish crime books) (and as Wikipedia tells me) The Shadow Line (I don’t know it) as well as the score for aptly timed story of being homeless at Chritmas, Hector. Actually looking into it, there’s a hell of a lot to Emily that I didn’t know, that is praise worthy and interesting. So should you wish to dig deeper, there’s plenty there to discover!

“This show came about because a) we’ve wanted her to perform for years and b) because a keen eyed local Ben, tagged me in a post of Emily’s asking for house shows. We couldn’t come close to mustering a house show for the price, but we could do what is the closest gig you’ll ever get to a house show, without it being in someone’s house, our venue, The Lamb in Devizes.

“Complete with an open fire, the Lamb is the most intimate of venues, only holding a maximum of 60 (something) but for this show I’m strictly limited the tickets to 40 to retain the intimate feel of friends, attempting to get the house show feel. Emily has forgone a support slot too, so we’ll be presented with 2 separate sets spanning her many musical guises.

“This gig really sets us up for what we hope to be a fantastic year, and as ever, with your support and interest it will be! If you’re not familiar with our regular shows in Devizes, feel free to search us on all the regular social media’s under the handle SHEER_MUSIC.”
