Panoramic in scope, trumpeter Rory Simmons’ Monocled Man are deeply rooted in jazz but draw on reflective electronica and rock in their new project We Drift Meridian.
Inspired by the remoteness and sometimes curious histories and characters of far-flung islands and isolated spaces, singers Emilia Mårtensson and Ed Begly join the trio of Rory, Chris Montague (electric guitar) and Jon Scott (drums/electronics) alongside captivating projections.
We Drift Meridian is the follow up to their debut release on Whirlwind ‘Southern Drawl’ but with a distinctive new dimension of carefuly crafted cinematic beds of sound and pulsating electronic textures evoking drifting, searching panoramas.
Jamie Cullum commented: “A fascinating mix of jazz, electronic music, improvised music… It’s really quite uncategorisable this and I think if you’re someone who’s interested in music that has many different layers and complexities to it but is also just a fabulous listen from beginning to end then you’re going to absolutely love this.”
One of the most creative and dynamic musicians on the new music scene, Rory Simmons is regarded as having a highly original and distinctive voice as a trumpet-player, producer and composer. He has toured and performed internationally with many artists and as a session musician, and has worked with Jamie Cullum, Friendly Fires, Paolo Nutini, Cody Chesnutt, Valerie June, Mount Kimbie, Bat For Lashes, Brand New Heavies, The Guillemots and Tim Minchin.
