Brecht-taking musical theatre comes to the stage with University of Oxford students

Mack the Knife is in town as Bertolt Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera comes to Oxford Playhouse on Wednesday 17 to Saturday October 20.

Following its stunning debut at the National Theatre, Simon Stephens’ witty, grittyadaptation of Brecht’s groundbreakingmusical playis brought to the Playhouse stage by University of Oxford students, in a production influenced by the dystopian TV series Black Mirror.

The coronation is looming, London is restless, and no-one is safe from the corrupt Mr and Mrs Peachum. When their daughter elopes in the middle of the night, a man-hunt begins through the grimy backstreets, brothels, and gallows of the East End for her crime-lord husband.

The Threepenny Opera broke all the rules when it premiered 90 years ago, and this darkly comic, anarchic show remains as relevant as it was when it was first written, with its critique of morality, and abuse of power. Threepenny’s combination of cynicism and comedy invites the audience to revel in the riotous action that unfolds on stage, while leaving them questioning the very fabric of our society.

Expect no arias on this jaunt into the underbelly of London, accompanied by Kurt Weill’s timeless score (including jazz classic Mack the Knife) and Simon Stephens’ bold new adaptation of Brecht’s libretto. Come shed your scruples and dive into a world determined to destroy itself in a titillating display of blood, sex and politics.

Don’t miss this riotous musical comedy that you’ll be begging to see!

Tickets for The Threepenny Opera at Oxford Playhouse start at £10 and are available from the Ticket Office on 01865 305305 or book online at www.oxfordplayhouse.com
