In a world where hyper-masculinity instructs women to be passive and conciliatory, anger is a terrifying thing. 1 in 4 women in the UK will experience sexual violence at some point in their lives. Roughly 85,0000 women a year.

Body Politic are delighted to present THEM - a new, powerfully gripping display of hip hop dance theatre. Fuelled by fury, THEM explores three young women’s struggle to navigate loss of self, trauma and mental wellbeing.

After the publicly acclaimed 2019 tour of Father Figurine, artistic director Emma-Jane Greig and choreographer Jackie Kibuka team up to present a piece that shifts through time and space as the women find healing from the pages of their journal and resolve from the voices of others.

Body Politic have also created an online resource entitled Digital THEM with creative tasks, original artwork, poetry, research and support links, to continue the connection with audiences long after the curtain has come down.

Inspired by young women’s experiences, Emma-Jane Greig said: “THEM is a vehicle to reflect the upheaval sexual violence has on women today, physically, mentally, and politically. This is an opportunity to use the universal language of Hip Hop to engage with audiences to discuss a poignant topic continually in the headlines.

“This is an opportunity to create space for discussion, learning and understanding from young audiences around issues of consent and sexual assault, which has become commonplace within school settings.”
