Absorbing sound sculpture will take over Newbury Market Place at the end of May

On Monday 29 May, the Corn Exchange, Newbury will present the next event in its exciting outdoor arts programme, Ring Out.

Working with multi-award winning composer and artist Ray Lee, the Corn Exchange will transform the Market Place with a mesmerising, large-scale sound art installation, using giant industrial tower structures and huge bell like speaker cones.

At 1pm, 4pm, 6pm and 9.30pm on the last bank holiday of May, a team of volunteer bell-ringers will start to operate the industrial sized machinery and make the pendulum arms of the humungous towers sway, gradually swinging higher and higher until each arm soars up over the heads of the audience, ringing out as they move.

The audience is invited to move around the space and take in the evolving sounds and melodies created as they change throughout the performance. These performances are free to attend.

Ray Lee is an artist who makes music that moves. Born out of a fascination for the invisible forces that surround us, his spectacular sound artworks have transfixed and delighted audiences the world over.

Ray brought his monumental work, Chorus, to Newbury in April 2013, drawing audiences in their thousands to Newbury’s Market Place to hear a celestial choir of spinning speaker cones sing their siren to the local area, before touring across the globe.

Ring Out continues Ray Lee’s distinctive combination of sound and kinetic sculpture that pushes at the boundaries of street art by bringing high quality contemporary composition into the public realm.

Ring Out has been developed at the Corn Exchange’s 101 Outdoor Art Creation Space. The installation has been commissioned by OCM and has received a PRS New Music Biennial award and Arts Council England support with performances scheduled for Hull (City of Culture) and at London South Bank, and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

The Corn Exchange’s Outdoor Arts Programme is supported by Greenham Common Trust and Arts Council England.
