The sun shone on the first of the seasons Little Big Festival Singer Songwriter Showcases, staged within Old Town’s beautiful Victorian Town Gardens on Sunday.

“Local people turned out to enjoy the music and chill out in the sun it was a really lovely afternoon,” said Josie Williams, Community Arts Development Office at Commonweal School and the Little Big Festival coordinator.

“Thank you to all the performers who gave up their time to entertain and thank you to Ali Sutcliffe for providing the story time sessions.

“If you would like to be involved please don’t hesitate to contact me, we are always on the lookout for a wide range of entertainment,” Josie added.

Throughout the season families have the opportunity to watch a wide range of bands from semi acoustic ballad driven material through to rock and concert bands and activities for young families. The café will be open serving homemade cakes and teas. This year the festival is supporting the Brighter Futures GWH Radiotherapy Appeal.

The idea for the festival was born from the enthusiasm of Commonweal Head Teacher Keith Defter who was inspired after he visited Bryant Park in New York who host all manner of activities for the local people. When he returned from his holiday he asked Josie Williams, the school’s Community Arts Development Officer to arrange something similar in Old Town.

Josie said: “I said of course Keith leave it with me! I then spoke to Carol Watts who runs the Town Gardens Café and Martin Hambidge from Swindon Borough Council who looks after park and we were soon up and running. The festival is very much about empowering the community to organise their own events under the Little Big Festival banner.

“Throughout the season local people are encouraged to perform, or run workshops and taster sessions for the enjoyment of the local people.”
