Marlborough Jazz Festival to be 'confined' to Town Hall after 2016 road closure issues

After issues with road closures during last year’s Marlborough Jazz Festival, organisers have confirmed the event will return in 2017, though not in its usual “strolling” format.

The popular international festival always draws impressive crowds, but last year’s event saw Wiltshire Council withdraw the customary road closures through Marlborough high street in an effort to keep local trade going amidst the festivals goings-on.

Organisers have laid the blame for several “close calls” that are claimed to have occurred on the high street as festival attendees strolled between the multiple venues hosting a variety of acts.

In light of this, the festival will be moving to Marlborough Town Hall, with attendees able to still move around the offerings of the event, albeit contained within the one building.

A notification on the Jazz Festival website said: “The failure of the local authority to grant adequate road closures in the interests of public safety has made it impossible for the Marlborough International Jazz Festival to continue in its now traditional form.

“Conscious of the disappointment expressed by our loyal punters and sponsors, the organisers have decided to nevertheless hold an event this year, featuring all-star performers, in Marlborough Town Hall over the weekend of 14th-16th July.
