On 16 March, advice from the UK government around managing Covid-19 changed very significantly. Following the Prime Minister’s briefing, the theatre made the difficult decision to announce that from Tuesday 17 March the Corn Exchange, the Learning Centre and The Base would close until further notice and none of their associated activity will be taking place. A statement reads…
These are not decisions that we have taken lightly, but the safety of our participants, volunteers, performers, artists, audience members and staff members is paramount to us as we navigate these unprecedented times. We are closely following government advice and will reopen as soon as possible.
We understand customers may be disappointed if they have booked to see a show or film or have signed up to a workshop or class during this period. As a charity, the financial implications of this closure are significant. We will be offering refunds, but we need the support of our audiences to get us through these difficult times and, if customers can afford to consider donating the cost of their tickets to the Corn Exchange, we would be truly grateful.
Katy Griffiths, Director of the Corn Exchange, says, ‘This has been a difficult decision to make but the welfare of our visitors and the Corn Exchange team is paramount. Over the coming days we will be exploring what else our team will be able to do to support our local community; from creating online resources and virtual classes to finding ways to mobilise our staff, volunteers and audiences to help each other during this unprecedented time. The financial implications of this closure are huge, and we would like to thank you all for your continued support during this challenging time. We look forward to welcoming you back as soon as we can.’
We will be managing all cancellations on a rolling two week basis, rescheduling wherever possible and our front of house team will be in touch with all affected customers in due course. We ask customers to bear with us during this time as we have a large number of customers to contact.
We will keep everyone up-to-date as the situation changes and thank the community for their understanding and continued support at this time.
