For 2015, this spooky tale, adapted by Neil Bartlett, will be directed by Pegasus Artistic Director Jonathan Lloyd. The story of the miserly, miserable Scrooge who learns the true meaning of Christmas, will be an inventive and captivating story complete with ghostly visitors, a rumbustious interactive party, jolly festive singing, a sprinkling of how-do-they-do-that magic plus lots and lots of Christmas sparkle.
Director Jonathan Lloyd says “We’re delighted to be working with Neil Bartlett who first created this adaptation for the Lyric Hammersmith in 2002. Neil worked at Pegasus in the 1980s, directing Théâtre de Complicité’s first show and it’s great to welcome him back here.”
The production (Designer Liz Cooke, Lighting Designer Chahine Yavroyan) blends traditional Victoriana with light modern touches creating a haunting atmosphere with playful, humorous overtones. It also benefits from the creative involvement of Flintlock Theatre’s Robin Colyer and Anna Glynn who are Pegasus supported artists.
The cast of four is headed by Richard Kidd as Scrooge with Ben Callon, Phoebe Brown and Anna Wheatley playing all other adult parts. Two members of Pegasus Youth Theatre, Edith England and Joe Stokes play the younger roles of the Ghost of Christmas Future, the young Scrooge and Tiny Tim.
The cast will also, with the help of composer Osnat Schmool, create a thrilling soundscape for the production from spooky nerve jangling underscores to loud musical party scenes.
Pegasus will be creating lots of community involvement during the run with a Gallery of Ghosts exhibition of drawings from local schools and curtain raiser carol singing from Oxford choirs getting everyone into the festive spirit right from the start.
