A brand new production of the hit West End play 'Shakespeare in Love' comes to Oxford

I know something of a woman in a man’s profession. Yes, by God, I do know about that…

A brand new production of the hit West End play Shakespeare in Love comes to Oxford Playhouse from Tuesday October 30 to Saturday November 3.

This feel-good, five-star rom-com, based on the Oscar-winning film, tells the story of two star-crossed lovers - young Will Shakespeare and the beguiling Viola de Lesseps, the beautiful daughter of a wealthy merchant. Viola is prepared to do anything to fulfil her secret dream of becoming an actor and pursuing a passionate affair with the greatest playwright of the age.

Against a bustling background of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming and backstage theatrics, Will’s love for Viola quickly blossoms and inspires him to write his greatest masterpiece.

The film Shakespeare in Love written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard and starring Judi Dench, Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow won no less than seven Academy Awards, including best screenplay, following its premiere in 1998. Adapted for the stage by Lee Hall, the production opened for a triumphant West End run in 2014 to both critical and public acclaim.

Packed full of laughs, warmth and wit, it’s the perfect pre-Christmas treat. So dig out your glad-rags and come and enjoy all that’s best about a big night in the West End, right on your doorstep.
