The Queen of folk in concert

Embarking on their second album Maddy Prior and her team, Giles Lewin and Hannah James, will be hosting a concert at The Theatre, Chipping Norton October 17.

A true legend of British music, Maddy Prior has built her career on exploring various musical avenues. Her latest album 3 For Joy is no exception, a further exploration of the tradition that she loves.

Together with her new musical partners Giles Lewin, and young accordion player Hannah James, Maddy returns to perform the music of England, the British Isles and Eastern Europe - all delivered in her own unique style.

On the upcoming tour, Maddy said: “I am blessed working in music, with excellent musicians.

“Over the years it has been a delight, and no musical endeavour has been more delightful that working with Hannah and Giles.

“Giles is a talented multi-instrumentalist playing fiddle, recorders, bagpipes, whistles and more. He has a classical background but has enveloped himself in Irish music, early music and Arabic music, bringing depth of textures to any music he approaches.

Hannah is a young person of skill and musicality. Her background in folk, blended with years going to Ethno camps, learning intimately the music of other cultures, gives her a daring palette of acoustics that she brings to all she does. A singer of stark strength and flexibility, she also is a stunning clog dancer and foot percussionist.

“We have worked together for about five years, making one album, 3 for Joy, but are now embarked on our second. It is to be called Shortwinger, and has a theme of the wild field. Mainly birds and hares.

“Murmuration looks at the declining population of starlings and their stunning evening display.

“Swallow is a modern song concerning the migration and absence of our loved summer visitor.

“The Lark in the Clear Air is a new setting of his beautiful old song, by Giles, as is The Owl, a poem by Emily Dickinson.”

David Quantick, of Q Magazine, said: “Folky three join up for joyously beardless collaboration.”
