The Little Match Girl: a warming tale for winter by The Last Baguette theatre company

A family show for Christmas, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s traditional tale, will be touring Ocelotshire throughout December.

International theatre company The Last Baguette are bringing this Christmas classic to venues near you. The Wiltshire based company bring theatre artists from around the world to work at Pound Arts in Corsham to create high quality touring theatre.

The Little Match Girl is a touching, madcap and heart-warming Christmas show for all the family.

The production will tour from December 1 to December 24 to theatres, arts centres, village hall.. In this magic, humorous and poignant show, The Last Baguette use visual storytelling, live music and puppetry to shine a light on Hans Christian Andersen’s classic winter tale. The script is written by T. A. Woodsmith, winner of the Sunday Times Playwriting Award.

The Last Baguette are company in residence at Pound Arts, Corsham and make fast-paced, irreverent physical comedy. Their work is entertaining, accessible and eccentric. In 2016 the company toured Dracula, a Terrifying Comedy throughout October to sell-out audiences. It was “a spinetinglingly funny production!” said an audience member from Stroud Subscription Rooms.

This year the company returns with an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Match Girl. Director Susana Alcantud from Spain said: “It is a wonderful story. It goes right to the heart of what Christmas means.”

In the show the story follows Alice, a match seller in Victorian London. We meet her in the morning and follow her throughout her day, as she encounters funny and zany characters on the vibrant city streets. When Alice is cold, she strikes a match and the stage transforms. We enter the fantastic world of Alice’s imagination, with talking turkeys, dancing rats, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and their chattering Christmas tree.

The Last Baguette specialise in creating touring work that can be performed in a wide variety of venues. Producer, Sidney Robb explained: “We are performing in local libraries and village halls as well as theatres, because we believe it is important that everyone has access to high quality theatre, no matter your geographic or economic situation.”

Wiltshire tour dates include Bradford on Avon and Warminster Libraries, village halls in Minety and Hullavington, Swindon Arts Centre and the Pound, Corsham.

As part of the project the Baguettes will be leading Twisted Tales, a series of theatre workshops for children and young people in Corsham and Bradford on Avon. Participants will learn about theatre create their own contemporary fairy tales, build confidence, make new friends and have fun.
