Swindon art gallery to exhibit collection of significant abstract paintings

Since 1947, the Contemporary Art Society has gifted more than 30 works of art to Swindon Museum and Art Gallery.

To celebrate their support and generosity, the Art Gallery is holding an exhibition showcasing a display of selected works featuring some of the most significant abstract paintings in the collection by Gillian Ayres, Terry Frost and Roger Hilton.

Alongside these are important modernist works by Patrick Hayman and Charles Blackman, and contemporary watercolours and ceramics given to Swindon in the 21st century.

This exhibition continues our celebration of the individuals and organisations whose generosity and guidance have helped create the Swindon Collection of Modern British Art. It follows an exhibition of works given to Swindon in the 1940s by HJP Bomford and a display of the Ron Sloman Gift, an ongoing donation of contemporary ceramics.

The Contemporary Art Society exists to encourage an appreciation and understanding of contemporary art by a wide audience and to donate works by important and new artists to museums and public galleries across the UK.

Since 1910 the Contemporary Art Society has donated more than 8,000 works to museums and public galleries – from Bacon, Freud, Hepworth and Moore in their day through to the influential artists of our own times – championing new talent, supporting curators, and encouraging philanthropy and collecting in the UK

Caroline Douglas, Director, Contemporary Art Society, said: “we are proud to have been able to place works of consistently high quality in the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Swindon is a much valued member of the network of museums across the country that we support and we look forward with much anticipation to seeing plans for the new museum take shape.”

The Contemporary Art Society exhibitions runs until 26 August and is free to look around.
