Fifteen-year-old GCSE student, Ruby Joyce from Swindon, has just released her debut single ‘Hourglass‘ across all reputable music platforms online.
A passionate singer since the earliest age, Ruby attended singing lessons every week from the age of seven, and started performing in front of audiences from the age of nine. She has also received commendations in the Swindon Festival of Music, for her rendition of songs from musicals.
Ruby is quick to credit Jorja Smith and Billie Eilish for being her musical influences. But as she also sings lead vocals in the rock band The Midnight Activists, she frequently draws on the rawer, indie sounds of Arctic Monkeys and Catfish and the Bottlemen.
For now, Ruby is focusing on striking the industry with her symbolic lyrics and a particularly electronic driven contemporary sound which evokes the city skylines of her travels. “I was lucky to travel to China this year and was blown away by Shanghai. I guess I’ve taken quite a lot of inspiration from places I’ve visited.”
Her producer, Raf Arjay of the Nice Entertainment label based in Swindon, has been supporting Ruby for the past twelve months, and together they have produced a number of original compositions which are due to be released over the coming year.
Raf explains: “Ruby is an exceptional artist, which simply makes art. It is really satisfying to just sit there and listen while she’s recording, and to see her progress in terms of her sound as well as her career.”
Hourglass is available to purchase, stream and download on all reputable distribution platforms. It is also repeated on the Swindon 105.5 #youthmatters show every Wednesday 7-8pm, where she sings a live cover of Jorja Smiths “On My Mind”
“That was absolutely incredible.”
