Royal Wootton Bassett arts festival given green light

Organisers of The Royal Wootton Arts Festival are delighted that this year’s competitive events will go ahead as planned.

The organisers say they are truly grateful to The Royal Wootton Bassett Academy and G4S security for allowing them to use their facilities for the event, which will adhere to covid guidelines for the safety of entrants and spectators.

The RWB Arts Festival is a competition for children and adults that takes place annually.

Founded in 2005, it covers music, speech, drama, musical theatre and dance and is affiliated to the British and International Federation of Festivals (BIFF) - the umbrella body for performing arts festivals throughout the UK and beyond.

The Speech and Drama and Musical Theatre sections of the festival will take place on 20 and 21 November with Music and Dance taking place the following weekend, and the closing date for all entries is 30 September.

Festival Chair Sandra McDowell said: “After having to cancel last year’s festival, we are absolutely delighted that we are able to run this year.

“We want to thank The Royal Wootton Bassett Academy and G4S for their generosity in allowing us to host our festival at their school. We simply couldn’t do this without them.

“It’s been a tough time for everyone, including young people. We know they have missed the festival and the performance opportunities it gives them each year. We are so happy that we are now in a position to be able to offer that again. So if you play a musical instrument, sing, dance, act, present or want to read the news, get your entries to us by 30 September!

“We will of course, be following covid guidelines strictly to ensure a safe and pleasurable event.

“After the successful launch of our poetry writing competition in 2019, we are pleased to announce that it will also be part of this year’s festival. So please get writing over the summer and send your entries in!”

RWB Arts Festival is also running a poetry writing competition for children. Entries from any children in Year 1 to Year 9 are welcome and it is free to enter.

All entries will be displayed, and the winner announced at the Speech and Drama weekend with gold, silver and bronze medals awarded to the first, second and third placings.

Winners will also have their poems published on the website and in the festival programme. The poems will be judged by local poet Ceri Gascoigne.

Entries should be submitted to lara.centreddrama@outlook.com by 30 September.
