The hugely popular Rambert dance company return with brand new commissions and premieres for Oxford Playhouse audiences this year, starting with 3 lives stream dates from Thursday 8 – Saturday 10 April 2021.
Following the huge success of their inaugural livestream commission ‘Draw From Within’ last year, Rambert has pledged its long-term commitment to the commissioning of new work for the small-screen with a series of real-time livestream premieres, starting off with Rooms by Jo Strømgren this coming April.
Rooms is a daftly ambitious dance-theatre-film that is performed live. It’s sometimes absurd. It’s often times funny. It’s beautiful and it’s peculiar, and occasionally a little bit sad. Or maybe it’s all perfectly normal? Rambert’s brilliant dancers will invite you into wildly different worlds and surprising set-ups. People trying to live their lives, navigate dilemmas, swerve mishaps and survive their mini-dramas.
Benoit Swan Pouffer, Rambert’s Artistic Director explained to us, “Working through the medium of livestreams brings us a great new opportunity to see the work from the point of view of its creator. With film, we are watching through their gaze, which is different to watching a stage production where the audience can choose where to look to a greater extent.”
Rather than being cowed by the limitations of the pandemic, Rambert have embraced the technological opportunities that the live-stream platform can offer. Working with ambitious cinematography and inventive performance and production approaches, Rambert has invited choreographers to reinvent the live experience - blending dance, theatre and cinematography to offer something new and innovative to its audiences around the globe.
The New York Times said of Rambert’s previous digital production Draw from Within: ”…unlike most livestreams, this was not a static recording or a glitchy presentation over Zoom. Watching it felt more like watching a movie, immersive and absorbing, yet easily the most technically sophisticated live dance production I’ve seen since theatres closed.”
Tickets for Rambert’s production of Rooms are £10, £15 a household or £20 including a donation split between Rambert and Oxford Playhouse.
