Off The Grid

with Luke Coleman - Our man in Iraq

So, I’ve had an idea. I don’t know how I’d fund it, probably through one of those begging websites, but I think it’s a belter. 100 stories from across Britain in one year. Jump in a camper, with nothing more than a vague plan, a camera and a laptop, and make 100 short films about our Sceptred Isle. One every three and a half days, the length and breadth of England, Wales and Scotland.

It was the cheese rolling that got me started – I don’t think any of the moments on YouTube or Vimeo do it justice. Yeah, bendy-limbed, charmingly nuts, entrants cartwheeling through frame on the hideous hill looks dangerous, but for those of us who’ve been to the top of the hill, the drunk teenagers that don’t fling themselves down are the real threat.

Maybe I could go to the Highland Games and get a creep shot up Prince Charles’ kilt? Hook my GoPro up to jockey in a 3rd rate bumper on a windy Wednesday in Warwick? Go back to my university digs and film the Sikh sword fighting celebration I woke up to, bleary-eyed, one Sunday morning?

So, if you see me with cap in hand in a future column, do the right thing, won’t you?
