REVIEW - Cracking CalneFest brings community together

This year’s CalneFest once again demonstrated the strength of the rural musical community, topped off with some seriously impressive headliners.

Taking place at the Recreation Ground in Calne (you might have guessed that from the name) CalneFest has been consistently pulling in massive crowds of up to 3000 people for a few years now, and always keeps a trick or two up it’s sleeve when it comes to headliners. Heading down relatively early, I managed to walk in on Jordan Marvell’s relaxing set of Ed Sheeran-esque singer/songwriter tunes, and eased into the one-day festival with some of the excellent food on offer. Although the sun wasn’t blazing down all day, the rain stayed away for the majority of the day, meaning everyone could enjoy the acts on the main stage which included an eclectic mix of local talent like All Ears Avow, Rewire The Time Machine and The Tribe, who put in a storming set of ska/rap/pop that had the sizeable crowd up out of their deck chairs and dancing through the evening. The second stage showcased the soloists and more chilled out artists, with the exception of The Real Cheesemakers who, as usual, had the crowds in stitches with their comedy rock set, including their trademark song about trousers. Very important information to be dispensing in the Wiltshire fields there chaps! Stand out highlights for me included Nick Page in the comedy tent, Nexus Era and Morgosis lighting up the atmosphere in the Dance Tent and getting to witness some of our areas brightest talents entertaining the crowds in Calne. Next year’s CalneFest is going to have a job beating the 2017 event, a high bar has definitely been set as it is every year. Congratulations to the organisers, you never fail to amaze!
