With a modern, electronic sound, Apothek (pronounced Apo-tek) are a duo that challenges pop convention with their debut single Family.

The instrumentation first and foremost is what hits you, it’s a very digital landscape that the pair are trying to create when you launch into the track, and the electronic sounds they are utilising are extremely well crafted and meld together to rise and fall as desired, overlaid with clear, almost softly spoken vocals that intertwine with the digitisation, drawing you in. Almost a little Coldplay vibe to it all at points. It’s enough to keep your ear guessing at first, with little pings and noises going on here and there, with the vocal switching through melodies that border on uncomfortable for the average pop listener, but it works well. It keeps a kind of ‘off camber’ approach throughout. Producing an electronic track with a lone vocal can be very challenging, as your trying to balance organic with mechanical, and at the beginning the space doesn’t seem filled as you would expect. Everything seems to stick out at you, and you feel yourself concentrating on various noises rather than getting into the song. The lack of a defined chorus also makes the track a little disjointed, but this isn’t necessarily a negative thing. Overall, Family is a sweeping mechanised eagle of a track, it’s a step into the unknown for a listener and that’s part of the attraction. It catches you off guard, it forces you to think and then brings you down softly with a consistency and charm that many electronic tracks can lack. A clear message of intent from a band on many UK watch-lists. For more info on Apothek, find them on Facebook, Twitter or at apothekmusic.com
