Performing Arts is well and truly alive and kicking at Commonweal School in Swindon this week

An event-filled week at Commonweal School was rounded off by a full house attending the Spring Concert last night (30 March).

Over 120 students took to the stage to entertain family and friends in the annual event that features solos, small groups and the entire Commonweal Collective alongside the House Band.

Ali Sutcliffe, Head of Performing Arts, said: “Students are encouraged to perform, regardless of their age or ability and we aim to encourage professionalism and commitment from all involved. I was particularly impressed with the Chamber Choir and Lyrical Lads who brought tears to the eyes of the audience with their emotional and heart-felt performances,”

“The soloists and small groups performed with accuracy and flair and I was mesmerised by the performance of ‘True Colours’ by Billy &Louie Hughes and Amy Gordon. I am so proud of all the students who took part in the concert and would like to thank them for all their hard work. In a world where arts education is being reduced left, right and centre, Commonweal continues to fly the flag for performing arts and maintain high standards in both academic and extra-curricular work,” Ali added.

“Being in the concert helped boost my confidence and it was also really fun. I was expecting it to be really scary but with the lights it meant I couldn’t see the audience and once I started singing, I just focused on that and all my nerves disappeared. The Commonweal Collective was really loud and fun, and it was great to have the live band playing alongside us.

“I spent lots of time at home practicing the song when my mum was out so the final performance was a nice surprise for her. She was really proud of me and I was really proud of myself. After the show, I experienced such an adrenaline rush that even though I was really tired, it took me ages to get to sleep. I would love to do another concert at Commonweal.” Martha Spackman- Power, age 11

Earlier in the week the school presented the GCSE Dance Showcase followed by the dramatic comedy Playhouse Creatures in preparation to the Harold Jolliffe One Act Play Festival at The Memorial Hall, Royal Wootton Bassett this Saturday afternoon.
