Oxford's men voted most gentlemanly in the UK

Gentleman’s Journal has conducted a survey of 2,000 people throughout the UK to gain insight into the modern gentleman of 2017 and also which cities men are perceived as being the most gentlemanly.

With its sartorial reputation (it gives its name to a famous shirt) and prestigious university, perhaps it’s no surprise that Oxford came out on top, with an overwhelming 54% of respondents naming it the most gentlemanly UK city – well ahead of second-placed London. Glaswegian men received the fewest number of votes in, coming in just ahead of Belfast. Respondents were also asked the traits that they find most unattractive in British men. Drinking too much and immature behaviour are deemed the most annoying, followed by inattentiveness and not pulling their weight around the house. When asked what’s the maximum number of sexual partners a man can have per year and still be considered a gentleman, 37% answered between 2 and 5, whilst, surprisingly, 35% of respondents believe the figure has no bearing on whether or not they’re a gentleman. With Italy boasting some of the world’s top designers and Milan Fashion Week a staple in the diary of any fashionista, Italian men were voted the most stylish dressers in the world, with a huge 67% of the vote. English men pipped Le Francais to second place, whilst Russian men received only 1% of the vote. To find out more on how to be a gentleman in the modern age, visit Gentleman’s Journal.
