Oxford's first over 50s dance company makes its debut performance on Saturday 29 July

Oxfordshire’s first over 50s dance company showcase its work in a curtain raiser for the professional dance performance of ‘They Live Next Door’, Saturday 29 July at The Mill. There will also be an exhibition of rehearsal photographs (from a 50+ photographer) and pre-show music provided by the Rusty Musicians (all over 50).

The show will be a double bill featuring choreographer Ieva Kuniskis’ shows ‘They Live Next Door’ with professional dancers together with ‘Encore’, created with and performed by Remarkable Dance Company, formed at the theatre in March .

‘They Live Next Door’ is a physical theatre/dance performance created for two male dancers. It reveals the touching tender and sometimes gritty stories of neighbours, weaving memories, expectations and rituals of modern life.

Ieva Kuniskis, who choreographed both shows, said: “We have created a work that has real artistic merit, something we can all be very proud of. We’ve taken inspiration from our experiences and tell a story through dance with a contemporary feel which is sophisticated and strong.” Her aim is not to create professional dancers but make the company to be the best they possibly can be.

This new company consists of 18 people, some ex-professionals and some who have never danced on a stage before. Among these are two who are in their 80s, one of whom danced internationally with the prestigious Rambert Dance Company.

Judie Wardman has taken photographs at several rehearsals to prepare an exhibition dance images. The foyer exhibition can be seen from 18 July.

The Rusty Musicians, who are providing the pre-show, are one of several groups for the over 50s The Mill hosts in its commitment to provide opportunities and entertainment for all ages.
