New Theatre Director joins Oxford team

The New Theatre Oxford has announced Lee Henderson has been appointed to the role of Theatre Director.

Mr Henderson joined the George Street venue in May, and said he was looking forward to the opportunities and challenges ahead.

“I’m delighted to be leading this iconic theatre in the heart of historic Oxford and look forward to working with the wider community and local partners, the city council and the brilliant team at the theatre as we build our next chapter together,” he said.

“Oxford has a unique vibrancy and I look forward to getting to know the city. The next few months are a reaching out phase for me, and I welcome any comments, stories or history relating to the venue.”

Among his key focuses are increasing the diversity of performances, playing a greater role in the local community and actively engaging with the wide breadth of highly respected cultural and educational institutions that neighbour the theatre.

Prior to his appointment in Oxford, Mr Henderson was Chief Executive at the Marina Theatre, in Lowestoft, Suffolk, where he was responsible for setting a new strategic creative direction and operational plan for the venue, leading the development of local sponsorship partnerships and the creation of a creative learning and outreach department.

Before that, he was General Manager at Theatre Royal Stratford East during his tenure overseeing an extensive auditorium refurbishment project. Previously Lee worked in Producing and General Management for numerous UK companies on shows such as Ghost The Musical, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Carnaby Street the Musical and Jersey Boys.

Richard Wingate, Business Director for ATG said: “I am delighted that Lee Henderson has joined ATG to lead the team at the New Theatre in Oxford. He brings experience and energy to the role and I look forward to working with him to realise his aspirations for the theatre and the city.”
