Susie Dent, best known as the Dictionary Corner expert on Channel 4’s Countdown, takes us on a whirlwind tour of Britain, revealing its secret languages and finding out in the process what really makes us tick. Find out in conversation with one of Britain’s best-loved TV experts. Sponsored by Waterstones. BOOK HERE
Join former Home Secretary and Orwell Prize winner Alan Johnson as he discusses the third and final volume of his memoir The Long and Winding Road. When Tony Blair brought him into Parliament in 1997, it was for Johnson something of a culture shock. But he eventually took to the corridors of power as to the manor born. Prepare to see Westminster as you’ve never seen it before as Alan discusses his experiences in conversation with Christopher Wain. Sponsored by Waterstones. BOOK HERE
Lady Carnarvon invites you to enjoy five real weekends at Highclere Castle spanning over 150 years: Disraeli’s reform cabinet in 1866, a literary weekend with Henry James in 1886, a visit from the Prince of Wales in 1895, a musical Easter with Sir Malcolm Sargent in 1935 and a life in the weekend of Highclere today. Delving into 300 years of archives, she reveals the history of weekend entertainment at Highclere, the setting for multi-award-winning drama Downton Abbey. Sponsored by Salisbury Independents. Returning for its 45th year, the Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival will take place from 26 May – 10 June, in locations in and around Salisbury. Boasting a vibrant mix of music, comedy, film, theatre, talks and dance over 16 days, the Festival offers an array of exciting new talent featured alongside established favourites in an annual celebration that sees the ancient city of Salisbury resound with artistic encounters.
This is the final year of Director Toby Smith’s four-year journey tracing the cardinal points of the compass, and looks westwards across the ocean to the Canadian province of Québec, a region with a contemporary image boldly defined by its rich history and arts. The Festival will delve into Québécois culture with a curated mix of dance, theatre, film, music and literature hailing from the French Canadian province. In addition, this year the new MouthPieces strand comprises a series of events giving voice to artists with lived experience of mental health.
