Looking up will never be the same again: Cloudspotting for Beginners

In this illustrated tour of the sky, founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society, Gavin Pretor-Pinney, will tell how to distinguish the many different cloud formations at Salisbury’s Arts Centre September 2.

Cloudspotting for Beginners is a playful trip through the varied beauty and distinctive personalities of the principal cloud types. From the ethereal cirrus to the terrifying cumulonimbus, it tells the story of the short but eventful life of clouds and their importance to our planet.

Gavin Pretor-Pinney is founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society, which has over 43,000 members in 119 countries. He is the author of the bestselling Cloudspotter’s Guide and Cloud Collector’s Handbook.

Showing amazing images sent in by members from around the world, Gavin Pretor-Pinney will convince his audience that clouds are the most dynamic, evocative and poetic aspect of nature, and he will explain how immense quantities of water can stay up in the sky for so long, how lightning and thunder are created and why cloudspotting is the perfect antidote to the pressures of modern life. Looking up will never be the same again!

Gavin’s third book, The Wavewatcher’s Companion, won the prestigious Royal Society Winton Prize for Science Books. Gavin has also presented television documentaries for the BBC and Channel 4, and is a Visiting Fellow at the Meteorology Department of Reading University. He co-founded the Idler magazine.
