Local painter explores 'art status' through brand new exhibition

Local artist debuts latest work with exhibition exploring true transparency within the art world.

In his latest show Swindon-based artist Adam Crossland will be displaying his latest pieces in a free exhibition at artsite’s Number Nine Gallery, Saturday 26 May from 10am to 4pm.

Speaking of his thought behind the artwork, Adam said: “This series of paintings were inspired by a desire to give weight and gravitas to honesty, routine and art making as therapy/pastime. However, although the process could superficially be deemed carefree, as always, importance was placed on the end result having a substantial feel; in that regardless of the apparent casualness of the process, the outcome would still be deemed as worthy enough to warrant it’s status as ‘art’.

“Aesthetically and narratively, these paintings lie somewhere between surrealism, naive art and cartoon. Non-sequiturs, bathetic principles and satire are juxtaposed against a simple, automatic, free and childlike style to create friction.”
