The cracking new script by Steve Marmion, writer and director for the third time, brings a contemporary edge to the traditional panto, but with all the archetypal bells and whistles that our audiences expect. It’s just not Christmas without the Oxford Playhouse pantomime.
Based on an English folk tale Jack and the Beanstalk is the story of the plucky but naive Jack and a handful of beans. After getting into terrible trouble with his mother for selling their hapless cow for a handful of beans, Jack’s dreams begin to come true when they start to grow… and grow… and grow. He will have adventures both good and bad, will he cope, will he redeem himself - there is only one thing that’s for sure – this will be the best panto in the land.
With original music, current tunes and some golden oldies, more jokes cracked than seasonal nuts and more action than the Goonies. Oxford Playhouse promises a whopping show, brimming with enormous excitement!
Amrou Al-Kadhi makes his panto debut as the baddie, Judy Henchman. Paul Barnhill, first seen at Oxford Playhouse as the baddie Abanazer in Aladdin (Christmas 2015), returns to play Jack’s mother, Dame Trott. Alessandro Babalula plays the Giant and his evil henchmen Dai Slowly. Emily Burnett is Smart Simone. Rebecca Crane is the Goose. Ricky Oakley plays Jack. Jennifer Wakefield, a former Bicester Primary School teacher, plays Jill. The ensemble is Daisy Elwin and Tegan Bannister.
Jack and the Beanstalk also stars the irrepressible talent of 20 local children, aged 11-15, full of beans ready to climb onto the Playhouse stage.
