GALLERY: The Oxford Lieder Festival kicks off this weekend

The sixteenth year of the Oxford Lieder Festival promises to build on previous successes with The Last of the Romantics: Mahler and fin-de-siècle Vienna.

The Festival will celebrate Mahler’s varied works, placing itself in Vienna at the height of Romanticism taking place from October 13 to October 28.

Over the course of the Festival, many of the world’s greatest singers and pianists will arrive in Oxford to perform all of Gustav Maher’s 45 songs, with many of his contemporaries and colleagues also represented, supported by an exciting schedule of additional events that place Mahler as one of the leading composers in his genre, and an emblem of a thrilling period for music.

The Oxford Lieder Festival is also opening its doors for people to participate in music-making and experience the joy of song for themselves in a friendly and welcoming environment and stunning surroundings.

A host of extremely popular workshops and masterclasses include Bring and Sing (a chance for enthusiastic amateur performers to bring an instrument and perform at the Holywell Music Room), and a series of masterclasses in which participants receive coaching from highly renowned artists. These exciting opportunities are available to all abilities and are not to be missed.

The support for the Oxford Lieder Festival and the excitement at delving into one of the greatest song writers is palpable.

Oxford will be full of song and a wider than ever range of venues are being used for this year’s events including New College Chapel, Merton College, Christopher Wren’s Sheldonian Theatre, the Holywell Music Room (Europe’s oldest concert hall), the recently restored Ashmolean Museum, the Bodleian Library and the Town Hall.

Sholto Kynoch, Artistic Director of Oxford Lieder Festival, says: “I am thrilled that such an amazing array of artists will be coming to Oxford for this unique celebration of Mahler and Vienna at the height of Romanticism.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity to hear Mahler’s complete songs, as well as the fantastically wide-ranging series of additional events designed to give audiences a genuine insight into the man, his contemporaries and colleagues, as well as those earlier composers and some of the pioneers of the early twentieth century.

“A spectacular opening night- the first of two visits from the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment- launches a star-studded season, during which performances take place all over the city, from intimate song in the historic Holywell Music Room to a film screening with live orchestral accompaniment in the Town Hall.

“Amidst the glorious surroundings of Oxford, the informal and friendly atmosphere of the Festival remains paramount. If you’ve not been to the Festival before, I urge you to try it out, discover the wonderful world of song and rest assured of the warmest of welcomes.”
