Ahead of her move to Manchester in September to attend the Royal Northern College of Music, Wiltshire-based indie-pop singer Ruby Joyce is emerging from lockdown with a new single packed full of personal meaning and flair. Having always written and performed her own music, this will be the 4th release produced by talented rapper and producer Rafael …. The pair have consistently worked together since Ruby’s first release of ‘Hourglass’ in 2018, followed by ‘Oblivion’ and ‘Divide’ in 2019.

Lyrically, Ruby’s previous tracks feature clever word play, her existential reflections and impressions of Far-Eastern travel, floating atop Raf’s signature sophisticated beats and catchy motifs. Now, with ‘Just Friends’, Ruby is venturing into the territory of youthful relationship angst, in combination with refined rhythms and harmonies.

“Everyone’s got that relationship that didn’t turn out the way they expected. For me, ‘Just Friends’ reflects my experience of long-term rejection and the feeling of inferiority towards someone I cared about, only to eventually get close to them and realise they weren’t for me after all. This song was about regaining my self-esteem and self-belief, while respectfully reflecting on my experience and being grateful for the person it helped me to be.”

The captivating single ‘Just Friends’ by Ruby Joyce is out 2nd April.
