Documentary screening + Q&A with the director of Brass Eye

On Thursday September 28, Oxford’s Ultimate Picture Palace will screen a new documentary about cult TV comedy series Brass Eye, followed by a Q&A with director, Michael Cumming.

Oxide Ghosts: The Brass Eye Tapes has been made from hundreds of hours on unseen material from Michael’s personal archive. The part-artwork/part-documentary shares insights into the process of making the legendary — and often controversial — television series which first aired 20 years ago.

Michael directed both of the pilots of the series and, over a two year period, witnessed the highs and lows of Brass Eye from a very personal perspective.

Becky Hallsmith, from The Ultimate Picture Palace, said: “In this age of ‘fake news’, it’s great to have an opportunity to remember the impact of Brass Eye. “

A graduate of the Royal College of Art Film School and recent recipient of an honorary doctorate, Michael Cumming’s catalogue of work also contains gems such as Jo Brand’s improvised comedy drama Going Forward, cult classic Snuff Box, five series of political pranks and polemics on The Mark Thomas Product and three series of Matt Berry’s BAFTA winning sitcom, Toast Of London.

The Q&A will be chaired by Professor Simon Kövesi, Head of Department of English and Modern Languages, Oxford Brookes University.

Doors open at 6.15pm, the film begins at 6.45pm. The Q&A will be between 7.45-8.30pm.
