On Wednesday 26 September, The Ultimate Picture Palace in East Oxford will host a one-off screening of Andrew Kötting’s critically-acclaimed film Lek and the Dogs, followed by a Q&A with the director himself.

The film is a crossover between narrative film and a contemporary art piece based on an award-winning play by Hattie Naylor. Film critic Mark Kermode recently selected it as his third favourite release of the year so far.

Lek and the Dogs is inspired by the true story of Ivan Mishukov, who walked out of his apartment at the age of four and spent two years living on the city streets, adopted by a pack of wild dogs. Kötting’s spellbinding story of survival draws on a range of innovative film techniques, including home movies and archive to produce a montage essay based on this fascinating story.

Kötting, who received an MA from the Slade School in London, has made numerous short films, installations, and art exhibitions since his debut Klipperty Klöpp in 1986. His first feature film Gallivant, released in 1996, premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival where it won the prize for Best New Director. He has previously collaborated with writers Iain Sinclair and Alan Moore, comedian Stewart Lee, and the Golden Globe-nominated actor Toby Jones.

“Our regulars love to see a film that challenges them, and this film promises to do exactly that! We’re incredibly excited that Andrew will attend to speak about his film and cannot wait to meet him,’ said Becky Hallsmith, Owner, The Ultimate Picture Palace.

The film begins at 6.15pm. The post-screening Q&A with starts at 7.45pm and is chaired by Professor Simon Kövesi, Head of Department of English and Modern Languages at Oxford Brookes University, who played a small part in Kötting’s 2015 film By Our Selves.
