Award-winning play about autism comes to Salisbury Playhouse

After sell-out runs in London and Edinburgh, and appearances on BBC and ITV, Cian Binchy, the consultant behind The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, comes to The Salberg at Salisbury Playhouse on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 March with The Misfit Analysis.

Cian has autism. He likes to spin tin-openers. He’s taught all the actors on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time how to be autistic. They’re very good at it.

Working as an autism consultant for the National Theatre, Cian has developed a unique perspective on how people tell stories about autism. Journeying through his mischievous mind, The Misfit Analysis takes us into a world of wheelchairs and blow up dolls in an unconventional exploration that uses multimedia, video projection and performance poetry to playfully question the place of disability in today’s world.

Paid performance roles for learning disabled artists are few and far between so to be taking The Misfit Analysis on its second national tour marks a rare success story for artists with autism. Since creating the show Cian has gone on to star in ITV’s The Level and a number of theatre pieces.

As much as performing, Cian enjoys meeting the audience afterwards: “I like it when the audience members speak to me after the show about what they have got out of it. Some people say it makes them cry, it was funny or it was thought-provoking.”

The Misfit Analysis won the Vault Festival People’s Choice Award. The show is produced by Access All Areas, an award winning theatre company for adults with learning disabilities in Hackney, London. Alongside professional productions, the Company runs participatory projects, an agency and the UK’s first and only training course for actors with learning disabilities. Access All Areas has been described as having “the power to change theatre” (The Guardian) and won The Guardian University Award for Student Diversity and Widening Participation.

The Misfit Analysis comes to The Salberg at Salisbury Playhouse for just three performances on Friday 10 and Saturday 11 March. For tickets or more information please contact the Ticket Office on 01722 320333 or visit www.salisburyplayhouse.com.
