Are you having a giraffe? Selfie stick invented for our long-necked friends

A zookeeper has created the first ever selfie stick for giraffes!

Becky Apperley-Gawn, who looks after the four Rothschild’s Giraffes at Chessington World of Adventures Resort, has created the world’s first ‘Self-ari Stick’ after seeing guests struggle to fit the entire giraffe into their precious selfies.

With just 1,500 Rothschild’s Giraffes left in the wild, Becky and the team at Chessington hope the Self-ari Stick, which is an extendable 6 metres long, will allow visitors to leave with memorable photos, avoiding  cropped out heads and poor angles. The stick is covered with leaves – the giraffes’ favourite food – to encourage the creatures to come up close.

Becky Apperley-Gawn the Zookeeper who created the ‘Self-ari Stick’ at Chessington World of Adventures Resort, said: “When guests meet our giraffe it’s incredible to watch - adults and children alike stand in awe. Educating guests on the animals we look after is a huge part of what we do. With approximately only 1,500 Rothschild’s (Nubian) Giraffes left in the wild, raising awareness for this now vulnerable mammal is massively important to us.

“With the introduction of the ‘Self-ari Stick’, we’re able to ensure guests have the perfect picture to take away and hopefully remember the giraffes’ fight against ‘silent extinction’.”
