An award-winning show from Broadway to The Watermill

This Summer, Jez Butterworth’s wild, multi-award-winning play Jerusalemwill be brought to life in a major revival at The Watermill Theatre in Newbury.

Directed by Lisa Blair, Jerusalempaints a defiant, alternative vision of life in the idyllic English countryside and is a perfect fit for The Watermill’s rural setting, which neighbours the county of Wiltshire where the play is set.

Inciting his own special brew of anarchy, Johnny ‘Rooster’ Byron fights against the hypocrisy of modern suburban life and embodies the spirit of England’s legendary giants of myth.

At his ramshackle caravan kingdom, the charismatic hellraiser entertains his band of ‘undesirable’ scallywags with outlandish tales, unbelievable antics and an ample supply of booze and drugs. Infamous for holding the most riotous parties this side of the Wiltshire border, Johnny is a hero to many but a villain to others. Pursued by the authorities, threatened by the local thug and reprimanded by his ex, Johnny is not a man to be beaten down. Kennet and Avon Council want the maverick evicted but Johnny has other plans.

Director Lisa Blair said: “It is a great thrill to be directing Jerusalemat The Watermill. Jez Butterworth’s epic play is one of the most exciting pieces of British theatre written in the last decade. I am very excited to bring it to life at The Watermill following its hugely successful run in the West End and on Broadway.”

Jerusalem runs at The Watermill Theatre from Thursday 21 June to Saturday 21 July. Tickets £26.50 to £15. Book at watermill.org.uk or 01635 46044
