With Brewery Bird

It's not often these days that you get to hear of success stories when it comes to industry, but Brewery Bird is here to report that one Wiltshire brewery is happily bucking the trend. Box Steam moved into their shiny new premises in Holt in December last year and on Thursday 26th January, invited a number of industry fellows, press and Yours Truly to join them in a Brewery Launch, which was officially opened by a very special guest..…

On arrival, a welcoming cuppa was made available to all which
went some way to warming the cockles – with the promise of beer and food later. We were greeted by a Brunel look-a-like (a surreal but charming experience), before being divided into four groups for
a brewery tour, followed by a Malt & Hops Masterclass – an
informative talk on the production and use of both ingredients in brewing.
The tour included informal talks from members of the brewery team, all similarly passionate and informative on various aspects of the brewing process. The proceedings came to a sudden halt, as the Guest Of Honour, self-professed train & ale-lover Pete Waterman arrived to cut the ribbon.
Clearly on a tight schedule,
he still made time to chat to a few of us about his involvement
with everything Steam and Railway related.
And finally the Food & Beer Matching Masterclass, created by renowned food & drink matching specialist Fiona Beckett. Local catering firm Lettuce & Lovage provided the food which included Apple & Sage Sausage Rolls made with Box Steam ale Tunnel Vision – although the highlight for me was the chocolate brownie served with Funnel Blower, a dark vanilla Porter – Yum!
Box Steam are now open to the public for shop sales and Brewery Tours can be booked by emailing philip@boxsteambrewery.com
A BRIEF HISTORY OF BOX STEAM
Box Steam began life in a converted farm unit in 2004, nestled in-between the villages of Box and Colerne; a stones throw from the infamous Brunel-engineered Box Tunnel. The Roberts family took over in 2006 and have seen a significant increase in production over the past five years. Isambard Kingdom Brunel remains the inspiration for the beer names and images; something the brewery will continue to promote as it grows.
