The Watermill Theatre makes a triumphant return to Oxford Playhouse following the success of Spend, Spend, Spend! and The Hot Mikado, with Noel Gay’s laughter-filled musical Radio Times, playing from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29 September.
In the heart of the West End in Blitz-torn London, the cast of the BBC wireless show, ‘Variety Bandwagon’, prepare to do their bit for the war effort with some light entertainment. But with half the cast missing, an officious producer, no script and the air-raid siren wailing, their live broadcast to America seems doomed to fail. That is until star of the show, Sammy Shaw, arrives with minutes to spare and unveils his secret weapon; Hollywood movie icon Gary Strong.
Can the eclectic cast deliver a show that will win the hearts of the American people? And can Sammy hang on to girlfriend Olive’s love now her old flame Gary is back on the scene?
A heart-warming and highly entertaining musical, Radio Times features classic songs from the heyday of radio including: Run Rabbit Run, Hey Little Hen and There’s Something About a Soldier. Performed by a talented company of actor musicians, the cast includes West-End stars Gary Wilmot, whose previous work includes West End appearances in Chicago and Me and My Girl, and Sara Crowe who appeared in Private Lives in London and Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Radio Times wowed audiences last year at The Watermill Theatre in Newbury and received 4 star reviews from national critics. Over the last 15 years the Watermill Theatre’s actor/musician shows have been critically acclaimed by national reviewers and audiences alike. Spend Spend Spend!, Hot Mikado and Sunset Boulevard all transferred into the West End.
