By Ed Dyer (Gig Monkey)

Brand new Swindon band The Starkers have produced a couple of demo tunes that draw heavily from older influences like 60’s garage rock and more modern sounds like The Libertines.

It is a fun, messy and retro sound. Sweet melodies and harmonies layered over jangly guitar riffs is a classic combination, and on the whole works well here.

Never Again is the better of the two tracks, well developed with neat pauses and hand-claps.

Not the Same is rougher and scrappier but has some cheeky lyrics that bring a smile.

My only concern would be the one dimensionality of things, hopefully the band can continue to develop and inject more originality into their sound. I await developments with interest.
